Managing Stress: Breathe and Start Living

Stress wreaks havoc on our mental, emotional, and physical health. Stress narrows our capability to think clearly, enjoy life, and function effectively. It hampers us in our journey toward our goals.

Time flies so fast!

We are now in the second half of the year. I bet many of us need to reboot or refresh…

In the busy and fast-paced world we are living, stress, burn out, tension, strain are just some of the popular words we hear [and experience] almost everyday, may we be at work, in school, or even at home.

If we are living with high levels of stress, our entire well-being is being put at risk.

Stress wreaks havoc on our mental, emotional, and physical health. Stress narrows our capability to think clearly, enjoy life, and function effectively. It hampers us in our journey toward our goals.

Difficulty is part of life, and this difficulty is the one that makes us feel stressed out. We cannot just shut “difficulty” down or be blind about its presence. The good news is, we can manage it!

Take charge of your stress! Do your best to prevent, reduce, and cope with stress.

The key to enjoy your life in the midst of hustle and bustle? EQUILIBRIUM. A balanced life.

Below are some of the easy-breezy strategies that can help you combat daily stress.

I. Avoid Unnecessary Stress
Managing stress is all about taking charge—of your thoughts, emotions, environment, and your manner of dealing with everyday difficulties.

a. Learn how to say “No”
Identify your limits and work around them. Accepting too much responsibility eats up most of your time and energy. Don’t spread yourself thinly; otherwise, your assets (skills, talents, and good attitude) will become your liabilities because your deliverables would become of less quality, or eventually you feel tired and abused, or your health could suffer.

b. Avoid people who stress you out
Limit the amount of time you spend with your emotional vampires, or those who consistently cause or bring you worry, anxiety, irritation, or complications. If you still cannot prevent them, handle them lightly and don’t allow them get into your nerves by just letting them be and just deal with them diplomatically (like if at work), and do your best to stay focused at what you need to accomplish at that very moment.

c. Take control of your environment
Think ahead. Figure out ways on how to deal with the situations that may arise when scenario A, B, C, or D happens. Don’t push yourself against the stress wall and be stuck, instead, find ways on how to climb it and get to the enjoyable side of life. “Preparation” reduces, if not totally eliminates, stress in every situation.

d. Avoid hot-button topics
If you get easily upset over a certain topic and you often find yourself arguing with people over it, just stop bringing that issue up or simply excuse yourself from the conversation to prevent conflicts that might burn you out.

e. Trim down your to-do list
Know your priorities and schedule your daily tasks accordingly. Distinguish between the “should” and the “musts”; and the “urgent” and the “important. Eliminate the unnecessary tasks. Don’t manage time for it will always be 24 hours a day; instead, manage your tasks efficiently and effectively.

II. Alter the Situation
If you cannot avoid a stressful situation, alter it! Figure out what changes you can do to reduce or prevent stress.

a. Express your feelings
If something or someone is bothering you, communicate your feelings honestly but courteously. Repressing your feelings tends to build up stress and might just complicate the situation. Conversely, opening up reduces your stress.

b. Be willing to compromise
If you want someone to change his attitude or behavior, be willing to meet half-way and change or adjust yours too. That person may also be experiencing something about you that he doesn’t like or agree with. Whether he is the only problem or not, doing your part will help you improve your social skills when learn the art of coping with people having a personality different from yours.

c. Be determined
Delay gratification. If you have something to do, stick to it. Be prepared and focused. If interruptions or distractions come your way, stand your ground by tactfully informing others what you need to finish or by abiding by first-things-first principle.

d. Take quick breaks
Don’t soak yourself in your work. It will not make you the Best Employee in town. Take quick breaks to stretch so blood will circulate well in your body or take a quick snack so your mind can refresh and be able to digest ideas or to release creative juices. During a “toxic” season, avoid overwhelming yourself. Break deliverables into manageable tasks, and do them systematically rather than one-time big time. Committing yourself to tasks that you cannot handle within the day will just affect the quality of your work and your mood.

III. Accept the Stressor and Adapt
Accept the things you cannot change and control. If you cannot control external factors, it’s okay! You can always manage the internal factor—you can choose to do better, feel better, and think better. You can better adapt to stressful situations and regain your sense of control by changing your expectations and your attitude.

a. Don’t force yourself to control the uncontrollable
Forcing yourself to control the uncontrollable (like the weather, the traffic, the mood of your boss, etc) will only create your burn out, and even fan the fire. Focus on the things that you can control and change.

b. Look at the bright side and from the upside
When faced with a problem, don’t focus on its inherent difficulty. Look at it as a good break to shine. Trials are opportunities in work clothes. Once you solve or overcome the problem, it will not only take you closer to your goal but will also reward you with good self-confidence and self-image.

c. Adjust your standard and attitude
Perfectionism is a major source of stress. Don’t be cruel to yourself and to others by expecting perfect results or the best quality of work all the time. Set reasonable and attainable standard for yourself and for others.

IV. Back to Basic
Refresh your outlook and reboot your system by going back to the heart of it all—yourself!

a. Nurture yourself
Dedicate one day a week for a really good rest day. Sleep like a baby. Relax! Do the things you enjoy and love. Have a good time with friends or simply have a “Me-time”. The important thing is you afford yourself a window time to recharge and appreciate your life.

b. Laugh
Keep a good sense of humor. Read funny articles, watch funny movies, or crack jokes with your friends. Loosen up and learn to laugh, even at yourself!

c. Maintain a healthy lifestyle
Exercise regularly to allow your blood to circulate well and to stimulate your brain. Have a healthy diet so you feel  healthy and feel good about yourself. Get a good sleep.

Remember, life is a gift to be enjoyed and shared with your loved ones.

Take care of yourself and live a balanced life!

The Feast: Six Steps to Optimal Health: 3. Heal Through Loving Relationships

*Genesis 2:18
-“Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”

*Ecclesiastes 4:9
-“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work”

*People get sick because they are poisoned by their bad/ill relationships or because they don’t have love

*Basic relationship on earth: how’s your relationship with your parents?

*Only LOVE heals

--------------------------------------------------------------------

- In 1956, Harvard made a study on healthy men, asking them how their relationships with their parents are. Their choices for their answers were: close to both, only close to mother, only close to father, close to none. After 10 years, the researcher checked their health. The results are below:

>Close to both parents:
-27% sick
-53% healthy
>Close to mother:
-82% sick
-18% healthy
>Close to father:
-91% sick
-9% healthy
>Close to none: 100% sick

- Sickness is separation (sickness is caused by stress, worry, fear, sadness, and other negative emotions)
- Perfect love casts out all fears
- Celebrate. Love. Connect.
-
Separation LOVE Connection

- When you forgive, trust, and love, you walk towards healing.
- We are not wired for separation/quarrel; we are made for love.

-------------------------------------------------------
-Some Italians from the province of Roseto migrated to Pennsylvania (that’s why there’s a place there not called Roseto also). Other doctors and scientists found a ‘medical anomaly’ in Roseto, Pennsylvania. All residents there are healthy and live longer compared with other Americans. It was later on discovered that the residents of Roseto, Pennsylvania brought their Italian culture of lovingness, cheerfulness, and close family ties and resisted the individualistic culture of Americans.

-------------------------------------------------------

- When you love sincerely, you feel healthy
- It’s God who heals… He has given us everything we need, including the power of love to heal our bodies.

-------------------------------------------------------

Heal Through Loving Relationships

I. Open up

1. Build a Roseto (close family) at your homes.
 build the capacity to give more love and to openly receive love
 spend more time with your family

2. Give more love
 S study was conducted among women with breast cancer. After the study, it was found out that those women with caring group (family and/or friends) lived twice as long; the other group without caring group, most of them died in less than 5 years, some a little over 5 years.
 With a caring group, joy and love are multiplied; and sorrows and sadness are divided.

II. Touch

1. Start showing your affection (go against the culture of individualism)
 Touch, hug, love
 It was proven that a pat on the back from loved ones lessen blockages in arteries by 60%
 Psychologist Sydney Gerard went around the world to observe people touching their partners in different restaurants. He found that:
- Puerto Rico: ave of 180 touches per hour
- Paris: ave of 110 touches per hour
- US: ave of 2 touches per hour
- London: 0

3. Create a culture that acknowledges one another (handshake, beso, hug)
4. Create a culture of “loving”

III. Volunteer

 Cornell University conducted study among 427 mothers with children. Researchers found out that longevity of mothers’ lives do not depend on number of kids, but whether they volunteer or not:
- who did not volunteer: 52% got sick after certain number of years
- who volunteered: 36% got sick after the same number of years

 The fastest and most effective way out of depression (thus, sickness) is OTHERS.
 Help others and you will help yourself.

IV. Accept more

1. Accept and give way.
 There are times that we are convinced that we are right; but we must also accept at times that the other person is also right (and we may be wrong).

2. Let the other person explain his side until he feels satisfied (for couples).
 Bro. Randy Boromeo and his wife never encountered a fight in their marriage life yet because they hear each other’s sides with patience, and whenever they feel that their emotions are mounting already they just hold each other’s hands.
 Make you own cues, be vigilant of each other’s cues, and understand each other.

3. If you want to be healed lose your need to defend your point of view.
 Surrender to God your excess pride
 Have a humble heart
 Don’t judge right away
 Remember that the quality of you life depends on the quality of your relationships.

-----------------------------------------------------------

*Proverbs 22:24
- “Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered”

*John 15:15
- “I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”

*Ephesians 4:32
- “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

------------------------------------------------------------
Challenge:

 Forgive! God wants to heal you.
 Live in LOVE
 Accept. Submit everything to God. Trust his love for you.
 Remove pride! Be GRATEFUL and HUMBLE.

The Feast: Six Steps to Optimal Health: 2. Heal Your Emotions

*Proverbs 17:22
- “A joyful heart is good medicine, But a broken spirit dries up the bones.”

*Sirach 38:9-10
- “My son, when you are ill, delay not, but pray to God, who will heal you: Flee wickedness; let your hands be just, cleanse your heart of every sin;”

*The bigger the trials, the bigger the victory :-)

-------------------------------------------------------------------

-What you feel, you can heal.
-Lord puts in us a fantastic system that heals (1. Our bodies have their best repairment; 2. Our bodies have the best army—the antibodies; 3. Our bodies have the best pharmacy in the world—we are able to secrete hormones for us to naturally heal.)

-7.2 M die yearly because of cancer. 85% of all diseases are rooted from negative emotions.

-Pills only relieves us temporarily from pain; but FORGIVENESS is one of the keys to feel better and avoid negative emotions.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

2 ways to get sick (things to avoid):

Too much negative emotions
Too little positive emotions

1. Too Much Negative Emotions

Stress and sickness are related.

>type A personality are prone to heart disease. (controlling, competitive, always rushing, etc.)

>enjoy life; slow down; trust God

>most heart attacks happen on Mondays

Anger and sickness are related

> other people find it hard to forgive

>people who easily get mad have higher death rate (6x) than those who are not (taken from the hostility test taken among doctors)

How to deal with stress:
Ø you cannot pretend that they’re not there… don’t run away from your negative emotions. You can’t escape from them. If you’ll avoid them, one day you’ll be numbed, and they’re still there becoming worse and manifesting in your body.
Ø feel you negative feelings before the Lord and come to Him…pray to Him. Let your problems press you closer to God (instead of making your problems stand between you and God).
Ø you can be yourself and be true to God—it’s okay to air to Him your emotions, sentiments, questions. (Psalm 22 and Psalm 55)
Ø don’t be afraid to ask the Lord why… but remember, they way you ask must be guided and has limitation that is set on trust in Him.

2. Too Little Positive Emotions

>the oil of gladness will bring us good health

>life is too good to be wasted on little things that won’t bring us good.

>focus on your blessings and on good things.

>acknowledge what gives you pain and pray to God for/about it.

>GRATITUDE!—always look for something to be thankful for and happy about.

>TRUST!—when you know that GOD is:
in love with you
thinks of you all the time
has great plans for you
..what can go wrong?

>the Bible has 7,000 direct promises of God and more than 30,000 indirect promises of God.

>1 Peter 5:7
- “7Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

> “Devil, you pick the wrong guy, God cares for me!”

>Thank God for what you have.

>Ask God. Believe that you will have it. Feel the feeling of having it already.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

***Challenges and reminders…

change you emotions
reprogram your mind and heart
decide not to be affected by negative people, events, and things
think happy thought (healthy, wealthy, happy)… your emotions follow your mind.
you have a God bigger than your problems
“Greater is He who’s in me than who’s in the word.”

The Feast: Six Steps to Optimal Health: 1. Awaken the Healer In You

*You will be healed because God loves you
*The Bible contains all the nice, right, and good things and the truth.

Journey to a healthy you…

-It’s not about gaining or losing weight; it’s about being healthy
-Read 3 John 1:2
-God is concerned about your health
-God is practical God—you don’t have to do complicated things just to be healed…
-Go away from stressful thoughts, temptations, and spiritual, emotional, & chemical toxins before you get sick; or decide to quit while you’re ahead
-Have a simple faith—God loves you very much and He will do something great for you. Just hold fast unto your prayers and live your faith
-God has given you THE POWER TO HEAL YOURSELF

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Our bodies are designed to heal itself:

1.) Our bodies have their best repairment—it’s in our system.

>remember your wounds when you were still kids… other don’t even leave a scar on our skin because your body has repaired the tissues even without the help of some medicines

2.) Our bodies have the best army—the antibodies.

>chemo kills even the good cells in once’s body. But the antibodies only kills the bad matters in our system.

>what weakens the healers in us are the toxins that we take and the negative thoughts in our minds.

>Read Mark 2:3-5

>the wages of sin is death… sin is connected to disease (when you destroy the

temple of God, bad feelings or thoughts against other people)

>the state of the heart is always connected to our physical conditions

3.) Our bodies have the best pharmacy in the world—we are able to secrete hormones for us to naturally heal.

>”placebo effect” => we become healed because we hold a mindset and a strong belief that we will be healed through that certain pill, which actually has no medicinal effect.

>our bodies can manufacture anti-cancer cells

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

-When you’re praying with profound peace, you feel the strongest
-Laughing (endorphins) heals the body
-“Don’t be moved by all that you see, hear, read… be moved by what you believe in.”
-If you’re walking in Christ, you’ll see miracles happen
-Quantum Physics: our body is like a flowing stream of energy; when something is wrong, the flow of energy is hampered.

Quantum Physicists discovered that:
 our brain is renewed/ changed in 1 year
 liver is renewed/ changed in 3 weeks
 skeleton is renewed/ changed in 3 months
 stomach lining is renewed/ changed in 3 weeks

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

-Your body is the expression of your soul—if your soul/mind won’t change, your body (physical condition) won’t
-95% of our thoughts yesterday are being carried over today; if we will change the way we think today, tomorrow our thoughts will change 95%
-If your thoughts change, so do your expectations (eg: I know I will be healed and God will grant my prayers because He loves me… then you will expect that you will live a life full of vigor as you enjoy good health
-Are you expecting to be healed or to be sick?
-Our bodies manifest our beliefs
-Love life! don’t expect sickness
-The preacher’s lolo who died in his 90’s once said, after many times of being sent to ICU, “You cannot put a good man down. Kaya gusto ko pang mabuhay kasi alam kong mahal niyo ako.”
-GROW OLD STRONG AND BLESSED! Grow old a hundred, with a body of a year-old healthy man.
-Pray that we may all journey towards good health so we can serve the Lord longer and enjoy His blessings more with our loved ones.
-You have the authority to cast out evil
-If you will pray, God will answer.
-Expect healing and do it in faith
-God has put in your body something that will heal you—best repairment, best army, best pharmacy.
-God gives you the ability to dream and fulfill them
-GOD WILL DO SOMETHING GREAT FOR YOU BECAUSE HE LOVES YOU!
